Is it Christmas?

Yesterday, I picked up my shiny new toy from the gym (16kg kettlebell) AND received my Supplement Warehouse package I'd been waiting on! Woohoo! It really did feel like Christmas, and I was super psyched! I'm currently sitting at the airport waiting for my flight to Colorado to board, and am already looking forward to coming back to my workout routine and getting to concoct some delicious new protein-infused recipes with my new cinnamon bun protein power! After all, I'm gonna have to get pretty creative considering that I have 5 pounds of it! Yaaaaaayyyy #workoutprobs

Kettlebell Strength Class

Sooo this class that Jeff teaches is amazing, and I felt/looked extra buff after, but this is NOT the class to take after you've already worked out once for the day. I honestly thought my arms/ hands were going to fall off my body. If my brother hadn't kicked me out of my apartment for the night (because of date plans he'd made) then I would have left mid-class! I was SO exhausted even after the warm-up! It was an extremely rewarding class after I had finished though, and I liked working out with some different people for a change, although, my 6AM buddies will never be replaced ;)

Queenie Photo Shoot

I'm currently gaining experience by training 2 of my glamorous America system titleholder friends, Charlena and Julianna. It's gonna be so gratifying to be the cause of their amazing bodies they'll be rocking this summer at the Massachusetts state pageant. I've already learned so much, but I need to expand my clientele to gain experience with different ages and ability levels too. We decided to do a fun photo shoot for advertising purposes for some flyers I plan to make offering discounted training sessions in my apartment building, so here's a little preview!

Rutabaga Fries

Rutabagas are my favorite french fry alternative I've found yet! The texture and color are very comparable to the delicious, but starchy and fatty white potato fries, but SO much better for you. The rutabagas are full of nutrients AND when baked, turn out crispy and delicious. They have a stronger flavor than potatoes, but I actually prefer it and think the earthier taste is yummy, especially when paired with the right seasonings!

-1 rutabaga
-2 tbs olive oil
-Juice from half a lemon
-Seasonings of choice (I used black pepper, lemon pepper seasoning, red pepper flakes and minced garlic)

-Preheat oven to 425 degrees
-Line baking sheet with parchment paper
-Peel rutabaga and cut into fry-size strips
-Put all seasonings, oil and juice into a bowl
-Coat fries with liquid blend (it's easy to just use your hands to mix)
-Place fries in a single layer on baking sheet
-Top with more seasonings if you wish
-Place in preheated oven for 30 minutes
-Rotate fries 3 times during cooking
-Use whatever dip you prefer, or eat them plain!

Battle Wounds

Because of how long the surgery took on Friday, I was prepared for the incisions to have been extended by quite a bit. Thankfully my foot isn't too mutilated, and I'm honestly just thankful that the doctor persisted and removed the screws. Otherwise, I would have seriously contemplated doing it myself! Haha I know that the pictures look bad, but keep in mind this is only 3 days after surgery, so I was actually pleased with the lack of bruising and swelling. I was certainly expecting the worst! I'll go back on the 31st and will hopefully get the stitches removed then. It'll be another 2 weeks after that before I'm allowed to START walking without the boot. Still exciting though!!! Oh, and please excuse my creepily orange toes…I assume it's the pre-surgery sterilizing stuff…

One Step Closer

I've gotten up to 100 pounds now. Yay!!  I still have a ways to go before I'm ready to compete, but gaining some substance on my body is a step in the right direction! I'll focus on gaining more weight once I'm really able to do conditioning work again. I assume this will be within the next month, since I start physical therapy soon.

Permission Granted

I finally got up the courage to ask my apartment building managers for permission to train in our gym, and they granted it! Yay! They seemed really elated that I was willing to leave my equipment down there for general use too, which I'm willing to continue doing as long as this arrangement continues to work out. I've been training Charlena and Julianna 2-3 days a week, and they seem to be loving the intense (but fun) workouts I've created. I've also been talking to my neighbors who I see regularly attending the gym to see if they would be willing to train with me. I plan to bring my business cards down with me from now on, so I can keep in contact and hopefully get some clients built up! It especially sucks right now because I'm off work recovering from my surgery…at least I have time to study I guess… I just never know what to do with down-time!

Getting to the Final "Leg" of My Journey

This past Friday, I went in for the procedure to have the hardware removed from my foot. It was supposed to be a seamless 30 minute procedure, considering that there were only 2 screws in there. So, the "30 minute" surgery turned into a TWO HOUR procedure because my doctor couldn't find the screws…He said that if it had been any other patient that he would have ended up just leaving the hardware in the foot to avoid any further bone disruption. He knew though that my entire life depended on me being able to get the mobility of my foot back to 100 percent. How could I be a personal trainer if I couldn't even walk without limping? There would have been NO chance of me ever competing in a fitness competition, or ever running another 5k…my life would have seemed like a dead end at that point, so I am VERY thankful that the doctor persisted!

6-Week Turnaround

This is the difference that a few short weeks can make. On the left, I was out of control and couldn't stop cutting calories; it was almost like a game to me to see how few calories I could intake in a day. This is why I look disgusting at 89 pounds. On the right, is me last week at 97 pounds; still skinny, but WAY better and more defined that I was a few weeks ago. This is why I can't stress enough how vital it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, because once it gets out of control, it's extremely hard to break whatever bad habits you've spent months developing.

Cookies 'n Cream Protein Frappuccino

This recipe is pretty tasty and super filling after a tough workout, but next time I might add in half a banana to make it a little more complex flavor-wise. Anyway, this recipe is 26g of protein and 168 calories for this massive glass! It definitely beats the Starbucks frappuccinos that I know I spend a fortune on!

-1 scoop Cookies 'n Cream Swole whey protein
-½ cup brewed coffee
-2 tsp instant coffee
-½ tub Chobani vanilla greek yogurt
-zero calorie sweetener
-3 tbs sugar free mocha flavoring OR 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
-1 cup ice (adjust depending on preference)
(Next time, I would add in half a frozen banana)

-Dump all ingredients in blender
-Blend until creamy

Stud Status

If she's not actively helping me achieve my goal of attaining the 6-pack I am constantly talking about, she is being the incredible Rx videographer who has shot all the videos I have on here….with only a little bit of reluctance ;) Hannah is definitely going places, and I have already learned so much from her! I can't wait until I'm as awesome and buff as she is! Thanks for all you do Hannah!

But seriously…these abs weren't here when I woke up yesterday morning!

Personal Pan Tortilla Pizza

If you ever have a craving for pizza, then this recipe is perfect! It curbs the craving for the cheesy, crispy deliciousness of pizza, but uses fresh produce and lean turkey! My recipe is loaded with all the yumminess of traditional pizza, but is way lower in carbs and calories. You are certainly welcome to adjust the spices to your liking, and this pizza sauce is pretty mild and versatile. The calorie total for the whole pizza is 225 calories! Can't beat that right?! Obviously this isn't hearty enough to be an entire dinner, but it would be nicely accompanied by maybe some baked chicken wings? YUM!

-1 "Fajita Size" wheat tortilla
-1/4 cup Classico Fire Roasted Pizza Sauce
-1/3 cup Mexican Style Weight Watchers Cheese Blend
-2 slices Sliced turkey (I used black pepper)
-1 handful spinach (rip into smaller pieces)
-2 tbs chopped red onion
-1/4 cup red and yellow bell pepper
-1/4 cup mushrooms (canned or fresh)
-Assorted spices (organo, garlic salt, pizza seasoning, onion powder, red pepper flakes, hot sauce, etc)

-Preheat oven to 350 degrees
-Place parchment paper on your pizza pan or cookie sheet
-Start by spreading the pizza sauce on your tortilla
-Sprinkle half of the cheese over the sauce
-Sprinkle your assorted spices over the top
-Add the turkey and veggies
-Top with remaining cheese and more spices
-Pop it in the preheated oven for 10 minutes (this time may vary slightly depending on how crispy you want your "crust" to be
-Enjoy, and let me know your results and variations!

Peanut Butter and Jelly Rice Cake

Ever have a hankering for a super loaded PB&J? Yeah, me too, but don't feel that it's worth the 400ish calories…especially when the craving overwhelms me at random late-night hours! This yummy recipe is a perfect snack or after-dinner dessert when you're craving something sweet and crunchy! It's only 110 calories, but super satisfying without the guilt!

-Quaker Caramel Corn Rice Cake
-1 tbs Better 'n Peanut Butter
-1 tbs Smucker's Sugar Free Jelly/Jam/Preserves

-Load up the rice cake with deliciousness!

Adventures at Victorinox

I honestly have no idea how I'm not fired yet…hahaha I literally spent the entire morning today at work studying for my PT test on the sales floor! My managers are so cool and understanding, which makes work a little less miserable. ;) The store manager has been out for the last 2 days at a company conference and we've all been enjoying the freedom! Unfortunately, she comes back tomorrow, so no more studying on the sales floor…boooooo Oh, and my manager Joe brought me a pecan sticky roll from Flour Cafe + Bakery this morning; IT WAS ABSOLUTELY DELECTABLE, and totes worth the 492 calories (yeah, I looked it up) hehe

Chocolate Protein Frappuccino

Okay, so prepare for your mind to be blown by this delicious concoction! I was craving chocolate (which for me is dangerous) and had just left the gym, so I decided to attempt to "kill two birds with one stone" by creating a yummy protein-packed chocolate smoothie. Needless to say, it was extremely successful and so yummy and creamy! Also, my frappuccino adds up to 210 calories, yet is packed with 27g of protein!
Just finished my evening workout in my ever-so-convenient apartment building gym! :)

-½ cup chocolate almond milk
-1 ½ cup ice (this varies depending upon what consistency you want)
-3 stevia packets
-1 scoop chocolate whey protein
-½ tub of the "Simply 100" Vanilla Chobani yogurt
-1/4 cup instant coffee

-Blend everything together
-Add more sweetener if desired
-Enjoy all the protein-packed deliciousness!!!
